Wearing a Paper Garment for a Day

Paper, markers, tape, video documentation (1 min 20 sec)
99 × 83 cm
2018, Beijing

The work reconfigures a garment as a recording device.
A garment was made from paper—it was both paper and clothing. Pens were tied to the hair, becoming both hair and drawing instruments. The paper garment was worn continuously over the course of an ordinary day. Every movement of the body, every moment of friction, every gesture, and every encounter with the surrounding environment left irreversible traces on its surface. Throughout this process, the body functioned both as performer and as drawing instrument.

2019, Beijing–Tibet–Beijing

A voice recorder was mailed from Beijing to Tibet and back again. Kept recording throughout the journey, it continuously captured the changing sounds of its surroundings. Over nine days, voices, silence and environmental noise accumulated into a single audio file, preserving the journey as a continuous recording.

A sheet of white paper was placed beneath a classroom desk. A length of cotton thread was tied between the corner of the desk and the participant's leg, with markers suspended from the tightened thread. Quietly, the slight movements and tremors of the leg left their traces on the paper below.

"Hey, What Are You Doing?"

Video (1 min 58 sec)
Variable dimensions
2020, Beijing

A continuously magnified image. A wandering line. A single sentence brings everything to an abrupt end. The video presents three endings. Where one action ends and another begins remains uncertain. Each seems to move towards its own conclusion, yet comes to an end quietly, without warning.

What the painting holds is order. A suspended iron wire follows the brushstroke in the painting, extending vertically to connect with a brush and forming a continuous line. Ink drips from the tip of the brush onto a 20 × 20 cm gridded paper panel, leaving traces over time. Life unfolds in order, and death is also a form of continuation. We continue to observe, contemplate the meaning left by death, and define it.
