Course

Typography Design
Undergraduate Studio
School of Arts and Media, Fujian Polytechnic Normal University
Spring 2026 – Present

Course Overview

Typography is one of the fundamental languages of visual communication. This course introduces students to the history, structure, and expressive potential of typography, with particular attention to Chinese typography and its role in contemporary visual culture.

Through lectures, studio practice, and critique, students explore typography as both a communication system and a cultural artifact. The course emphasizes how type functions across print, branding, digital media, and motion graphics while encouraging students to critically engage with the relationship between typography, technology, and society.

Teaching Approach

The course combines lectures, visual analysis, iterative studio practice, and peer critique. Students are encouraged to develop design concepts through sketching, prototyping, and reflective discussion rather than pursuing predetermined visual outcomes.

Assignments emphasize experimentation, process documentation, and critical reflection alongside final artefacts.
