Overview
Designing Local Cultural Identity explored how visual communication can reinterpret the cultural heritage of Luoyang, one of China's ancient capitals, for contemporary audiences. Although the city possesses a rich historical legacy, its cultural image is often perceived as distant, traditional, and disconnected from modern life, particularly among younger generations. Rather than replacing historical culture with new narratives, the project investigated how existing cultural symbols, local stories, and historical memory could be reactivated through contemporary visual communication, creating new ways for people to reconnect with the city and its cultural identity.
Development
The project combined historical research, field investigation, visual analysis, and cultural mapping to explore how Luoyang's cultural identity is expressed through its history, folklore, and everyday life. Distilling this research into three guiding principles—urban people, modes of communication, and cultural insight—I developed a visual identity system and a series of communication materials that reinterpreted traditional cultural symbols through a contemporary visual language. Rather than preserving heritage as a static representation of the past, the project sought to reconnect younger audiences with Luoyang's cultural identity by bringing historical narratives closer to everyday life through visual communication.
